Why doesn’t the media or community leaders ever address the issue of inner city high school dropout rates?

New York City, the nation’s largest public education system, has a 50% drop out rate. But that’s not even the worst. Cleveland, Detroit, Baltimore, St. Louis have around 75% dropout rates. These are actually figures, no exaggeration. Wouldn’t you think numbers like this would get the attention of the public and the media? Chicago has almost a “good” graduation rate with 40% dropping out, a figure though low in comparison to other large cities is still staggeringly high.
I don’t wish to get political, but it seems almost as if the community activists and most the media is almost comfortable with such enormous dropout rates. What are these kids going to do? Where will they go? How can they not become a burden on the community and be forever dependents on the public dole. Could it be that the reason why there is so much silence on this issue is because many community activists actually want people to become dependents? The silence is staggering.

There’s another reason why no one touches this issue: you can get killed. The teacher’s unions dictate school policies these days. If you question the education system and suggest teachers are failing and need to be tested, they literally will send their henchmen after you.
NYC’s public school system, from the teachers to the janitors, has open ties with the Mob. There have been a few NYC politicians who try to go against the school board and they end up either missing or run out of town. There was a 60 Minutes segment about this about 15 years ago.
